Sunday 13th February
Introduction to Writing a Short Screenplay
2-4pm ~ Roy Griffiths room
Head of Screenwriting at the London Film School, Brian Dunnigan will run a 2hour workshop looking at all the elements that go into writing a short screenplay. Examining storytelling and visualisation, scene writing and dialogue, character and plot, through the use of short film clips, exercises and discussion, this will be an engaging and thought-provoking introduction to the world of screenwriting. There will be opportunities to ask questions at the end about short filmmaking, screenwriting and the feature film industry in the UK. Halfway Hall and The Arts Week Launch Party  8:30-11pm ~ Keble Bar
After the second years have celebrated the halfway point of their degrees, festivities will spill from the hall to the bar, where all years are welcome to join the exciting beginning to Arts Week! Face painting will be taking place in the JCR, with prizes offered for the best-painted face (see competitions), while in the bar some of the biggest tunes will be played to the debut of arts themed cocktails. Keblites of all ages, big and small, come to welcome in arts week!


Monday 14th February

Open Tuning Guitar Workshop with Jon Boden
5:30-6:45 ~ Music Room
Come along and play some tunes with Jon Boden, lead singer of Bellowhead and the Remnant Kings, before he plays his gig in the O’Reilly.

Remnant Kings Concert
8-10:30pm ~ The O’Reilly Theatre
As part of the A Folk Song A Day tour, Jon Boden brings his band Remnant Kings to play some post-apocalyptic folk at the O’Reilly Theatre. Lead singer of internationally
renowned Bellowhead, Jon is famous for his incisive lyrics and beautiful tunes, and is joined in Remnant Kings by excellent multi-instrumentalists, Sam Sweeney and Paul Sartin and others who will bring concertinas and doubles basses, glass harmonicas and wax cylinders to what promises to be a thrilling performance.

The O’Reilly has been selected as one of the few venues on the tour where Jon will record a song with the audience, so bring along your best voices (and your mates’) to this exciting one-off event at Keble Arts Week!

Tuesday 15th February
John Saul Reads from his Short Fiction
5:30-6:45 ~ Roy Griffiths Room
Find out why Time Out says “John Saul is one of our best short story writers”, and The Guardian has called his fiction “beguiling”. Call It Tender, set in cities across the world, is a collection of love stories that often comment wryly on modern life. John Saul will be reading from his three story collections, answering questions and selling and signing copies of his books. Discussion to do with the writing and reading of fiction today will be welcomed.

21 Sketchbooks Project Exhibition and
fig. Magazine Launch Party
8-10pm ~Douglas Price room
Accompanied by live jazz and a bar, this evening brings together music, art and literature in the sophisticated setting of Keble’s Douglas Price room. The week-long exhibition of collaborative art project, 21 Sketchbooks, will be launched alongside the newest university arts publication, fig. magazine.


Wednesday 16th February
Learning from History - Life at the Royal College of Music
5:30-7pm ~Pusey Room
In conjunction with KCMS, Arts Week is proud to present Colin Lawson, director of the Royal College of Music, and world-class clarinetist. He will talk about playing a period
instrument, and his experiences at the Royal College of Music, providing valuable insights for anyone interested in music. The floor will be opened to questions and discussion.

Opening Night of Platform
7:30-10pm ~ The O’Reilly Theatre
Platform ’11 marks the third year of successful collaboration between Oxford University DanceSoc and Freefall Dance. Individual student choreographers have created their own pieces with complete artistic freedom, using dance styles ranging from jazz to contemporary to ballet. The performers represent some of the most exciting dance talent in Oxford and this year the showcase is set to be more creative and eclectic than ever, with pieces incorporating live music and other art forms as well as presenting original choreography.

Warden's Recital
8:30-9:30 ~ Douglas Price Room
An evening of performances by some of Keble's most talented musicians, from string quartets to woodwind octets, soloists and groups in a range of styles.


Thursday 17th  February
Arts Week SPECIAL Welfare Tea
3pm ~ JCR
This week, the Welfare team are holding a very special Arts-themed welfare tea ~ We'll bring along some multicoloured icings, hundreds&thousands, marshmallows and other delicious toppings with which you can customize some welfare fairy cakes, flapjacks, gingerbread men and more. And of course, it's all free!
The usual drinks etc will be provided as well. So come along for the opportunity to show off your artistic side through the wonderful medium of free food!

Comedy in Keble Bar
8-10pm ~ Keble Bar
With some of the biggest names on the Oxford comedy circuit, including sets from Little Dark and the Oxford Imps, stand-up Chris Turner among others, and Keble’s very own Alex Kealey compering, this night promises to be far better than the Bridge for Thursday-night entertainment.


Friday 18th February
After the Accident - Political Theatre and Prison
Friday ~ 5:30-6:30 ~ Roy Griffiths Room
Julian Armitstead won the Amnesty International Protect the Human playwriting competition with his play ‘After the Accident’, a gritty drama dealing with issues surrounding restorative justice: the parents of a murdered girl meet the joy-riding teenagers who killed her. Feeling failed by the system, they decide to take things into their own hands. Armitstead has worked extensively in prisons, teaching creative writing and working with prisoners. He will talk about his play, and the role of theatre and creative writing in the rehabilitation of offenders.

Pub Quiz with a Culture Twist
8-10:30pm ~ Keble Bar
Written by the famous Gerard, presented by the brilliant Ian Archer, with drinks by bar-virtuoso Henry and questions answered by you, this quiz night doesn’t need much more! Add snacks and cash prizes and you have the perfect end to your week. Prizes will also be
presented for all the other arts week competitions, so come along to see the results!


Saturday 19th February
Kieran Stiles Art Workshop
1-3pm ~ Jean Robinson Room
Kieran Stiles will be running a workshop based on the style of Paul Klee, looking at the techniques of ink wash and transfer printing, taking inspiration from nature and Keble’s distinctive architecture. Materials will be provided, but places are limited so please email

Gala Night Performance of Platform and
Charity Auction
6:30-7:30 ~ Keble Bar
The evening sees Arts Week rounded off with the final performance of Platform, preceded by a gala reception of canapes and bubbly accompanied by a top Oxford musical act. There will also be an auction of items from the week, books, artistic treats and photographs, the money from which will go to ROSY: www.rosy.org.uk

21 Sketchbooks Project Exhibition ~ Keble Cafe
Oxford’s first collaborative art project, started in Michaelmas term 2010, is comprised of 21 themed sketchbooks that have spent the past few months travelling from pidge to pidge, collecting photos, stories, drawings and collages. They will be exhibited in the Keble Cafe over the course of Arts Week before continuing on their travels!

Photos taken by Keble students will be exhibited around the Keble Cafe, along with all the photographs of students’ painted faces from the face-painting competition.
