THE LIVES OF OTHERS (2006), Direction: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck ~ Winner of a number of awards, including the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, 2007.
At once a political thriller and human drama, THE LIVES OF OTHERS
begins in East Berlin in 1984, five years before Glasnost and the fall
of the Berlin Wall and ultimately takes us to 1991, in what is now the
reunited Germany. Georg Dreyman (a successful dramatist) and his
longtime companion Christa-Maria Sieland (a popular actress), were huge
intellectual stars in (former) East Germany. The Minister of Culture
becomes interested in Christa, so the secret service agent Wiesler is
instructed to observe and sound out the couple, but their life
fascinates him more and more. While conducting surveillance on the
writer and his lover, he finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed
by their lives.

Dowry is the cause. Where will this crime lead us to?" In an imagined
near future where there are virtually no women, a high-caste village
man pays dearly for a wife for his five adult sons. It's the first
wedding in the village in 15 years. The bride is Kalki, who puts her
faith in the youngest son (the only family member who is not a brute),
then in her father, and then in a servant lad. Her desperation worsens

three of them has been hidden from the landlord. One day, the mother
leaves behind a little money and a note, charging her oldest boy to
look after the others. And so begins the children's odyssey, a journey
nobody knows. Though engulfed by the cruel fate of abandonment, the
four children do their best to survive in their own little world,
devising and following their own set of rules. When they are forced to

DOGTOOTH (2009), Direction: Giorgos Lanthimos
The film won the Prix un Certain Regard at the 2009 Cannes Film
Festival and has been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at this
year’s (2011) Oscar awards.
Dogtooth is a darkly humorous insight into a bonkers and surreal world
of parental control gone mad. A mother and father so desperate to
preserve their children’s innocence create a self styled utopia within
their secluded compound walls. Completely shut off from the outside
world the now grown up children have their own vocabulary and believe
cats to be man eating predators. When their father decides to invite a
woman in to service his son’s sexual urges, the domestic balance is
irrevocably disturbed. It is only a matter of time before the walls of
their superficially constructed world of childhood innocence and
fantasy come tumbling down.
